The good thing about smaller towns is Friday Night High School Football. Every Friday night during football season you will always see lights on as you roll into town with this past Friday night two of the three local high schools having their last game before the playoffs (unless they didn’t make it marking this their last game of the season). I ended up covering Tracy High School who is currently playing at West High while they have their field worked on. They faced Bear Creek High School from Stockton, CA to what ended up being a one sided game.

Since I am no longer a staff photographer for any organization I mostly freelance on the weekends, Friday – Sunday, while working a 9-5. However, since all the work is towards the city and I moved out in the valley, I have a long commute to and from work, roughly 55 miles. Some may think its nuts and some times I do think im nuts for making that trek that far but im used to it. When I drove as a news photographer I used to put around 100-200 miles on my car every day. Granted driving when I drove usually meant no traffic and I was getting paid for it. It was Friday so I took out the beast! I drove my car to and from work and since this was a busy week, I had to go in early and leave late from my 9-5…but the game started at 7. I ended up finishing everything at about 5:30pm at work and headed out at around 5:45 making it just in time for the game. The bad part of coming “on time” is that by the time you get to the field and set up, the creative things you can get during warm-ups may or may no longer be there.

*image removed*

The entrance of West High School’s football field had a short line for once. Like usual the Tracy Police has its presence at every football game…however this time they didnt have their big truck they usually bring.

Luckily I got to the field with a little time to spare on getting some creatives. I hustled trough the entrance flashing my press pass and made my way to the field. On the way to the game I thought a lot about the few games that I have covered this year and havent felt that I have had enough creativity so I knew I wanted to at least get some good pre game photos. However I only had 8 minutes to do it in and the main warm-ups were already done so I had to think quick on what I wanted.

I watched as the national anthem was playing and noticed a glow on one of the players (image at start of blog post). I immediately turned around and snapped away and the problem was just that. I found my self thinking that I “NEED TO GET THIS SHOT” and when I do that I mess up. The exposures of that image were terrible when I first took them. I hadn’t checked what they were set on and just shot. Luckily I “chimped” and realized that my settings were off and I started to work on my exposure and technique on getting the image I truly wanted. This also gave me a wake up call that I was just going through the motions and didn’t step back to think. The thing about photography is that a lot of times you get caught up making photos for clients and getting the safe shot but forget that to get the image some one will say “WOW” about takes a little risk and thinking.

Having one image that was great, felt great, but I knew I had to get more. Panning at night with green jerseys I found to actually work fairly good. Why? I have no idea but I have gotten some decent photos out of it.

Feature photos I feel as the key to successful sports photography. Any one who works the sideline of a game long enough should start getting some decent images. The combination of reading the next play, guessing where the ball will probably go next, understanding of the game and photography, combined with luck, should turn out good action photos but not always good feature photos. Here are a couple more:

The last time I covered Tracy’s game they had been ran over by the team they faced so I am sure running all over Bear Creek must of felt nice and brought up the confidence of Tracy as they head into their playoffs after shutting them out. As you can imagine, getting photos of both teams during game action when its very one sided can be very difficult but I did get some good action shots of Tracy High School…and one of Bear Creek.

I think this is a good time to chime in on this image and why I am so MAD about it. As you can see its a decent image that could work fairly well in a paper especially if this kid did something amazing on this kick off return…however…the roster had him listed as a kicker…and I dont think he was the kicker having the team at the Record without this image because there was no way to confirm his name.

Overall I think these turned out fairly well as a set. I always like to wait till the end of the game to get emotions and stuff but if I did that then I would never get these over to the record on their deadline. Sierra High School Football (Manteca, CA) against Rosemont Playoffs https://www.bballphotog.com/blog/2013/3/Sierra-High-School-Football-Manteca-CA-against-Rosemont-Playoffs Another Friday night means another High School Football game at a local high school. Do I mind? NO WAY!Football is always fun to photograph and since I love sports photography even a High School game gets me excited!

Sierra High School Football against Rosemont Playoffs

November 9, 2012 – Sierra’s Jordan Lewis (5) runs the ball during a kick return resulting in a touchdown during game action against Rosemont High School in the first round of the playoffs on Friday at Sierra High School in Manteca, Calif. (Konstandinos Goumenidis / The Record)

This past Friday’s game was the first round of playoffs for CCS and I ended up covering Sierra High School in Manteca taking on Resemont at home. The game started at 7pm but I ended up being stuck in some bad traffic. Usually when I am driving from my 9-5 back home, Friday’s seem to be a lot lighter…unless there is an accident, wich for some reason is less likely to happen on the way back then it is on the way to work. Normally on the way to work, there is at least one accident a day causing a head ache of a commute. But this time it was not an accident that slowed me down but the new outlets that have been opened causing major back ups even on the weekend…just what I wanted.

Normally I try to get to a game at least 30min early especially on how cold it has been at night to allow my camera to adjust to the temperature. A lot of times when you come from a warm place like your house into something cold, your lens will fog over until it adjust to the weather, but this time I was not fortunate enough. I was a couple minutes late after fighting the traffic but since my gear was in the trunk for over an hour no temperature adjustment was needed but that didn’t give me enough time to adjust to the lights. Even though I have covered games at Sierra High School in the past, I have shot so many games in between that I forgot where the dead spots of the lights were causing a head ache. I have a very hard time taking photos in the first quarter of the game until I finally figured out where the dead spots of the lights were.

If you never shot a night game before you might wonder what I am talking about. Most fields have what is called dead spots. Dead spots in lights are basically lack of light in areas of the field causing faces to come out dark. To our eye it might seem that the lights cover the whole field but

when one runs down the field there are some spots that the light does not hit the same causing under exposure leading to an image that you could not use. One may argue as to why I just dont use a flash, but flash has limitations as well. When there is a lot of action you want to capture as much of that action as you can to see what works best. When using a flash, that limits you to a couple shots at a time compared to the 10fps my Canon Mark III provides. Granted in high ISO and low light situations I am probably not pushing 10fps but its a lot higher than one or two shots.

Some old timers might laugh at this post about high speed cameras but its a tool of the trade and the ability to use tools the way they are supposed to only makes sense. I started out by using film cameras and for the longest time had resistance to digital cameras but today I think those same old timers who used cameras with manual everything can agree that using these tools help make photos we only dreamed about!

But now back to the game.

After the first quarter was over, I finally had the flow of things. Found the dead spots, got used to Sierra’s plays, and was able to figure out where the next play could possibly be going.

It also helped that the second quarter ended up being action packed helping the fact I showed up a tad late. Normally I leave right at half time to make sure I have enough time to edit for deadline and the ability to fix any error there might have been but this time I stayed back and covered some of it. Enjoy the rest of the photos!

In my past sports photography life I covered pro-level type sports and sporting events. Even though people would die to cover a major sporting event, one of my favorite thing to do is cover little league games and high school games.

Why? The access.

Sure covering high action sports is fun and entertaining but slowing it down and getting the access to get creative is much more rewarding...well at least to me. I find it funny how some people find photographing little league games and high school game degrading or taking a step backwards but to me those people don't have the drive and passion for sports photography as others do.

Tracy Little League Minor AAA Braves vs Phillies scrimmage - Sports PhotographyTracy Little League Minor AAA Braves vs Phillies Another perk about covering little league games ( aside if your own kid is on the team :-D ) is that there is no deadlines. Covering major events so long you get more in the grove of just getting stuff out so its a nice change of pace. The image above i like because its different...the shadow lines are so crisp but the image was so soft.

Tracy Little League Minor AAA Braves vs Phillies scrimmage warm-ups - Sports PhotographyTracy Little League Minor AAA Braves vs Phillies Baseball photography is a bit tricky though. If you think about it...pro's have A LOT of downtime so kids are no exception...if anything it's even slower as at this age they are still learning (kids are about 9-10) so the best opportunity to get great photos and have free range is during warm-ups.

San Joaquin Delta College Football (Stockton, CA) vs. De Anza College (Cupertino, CA) https://www.bballphotog.com/blog/2012/11/San-Joaquin-Delta-College-Football-Stockton-CA-vs-De-Anza-College-Cupertino-CA San Joaquin Delta Football

It’s been a while since I covered anything more than high school football so covering the San Joaquin Delta football game against De Anza was a nice change from the normal. I dont have anything against covering prep football I actually enjoy the freedom of the ability to do as you want and create some fun images.

This game I did want to do something a little different. I spoke to the photo editor about what I was trying to do and explained to him that I wanted to try and get some photos using Instagram for the paper to use on their online gallery. I could tell he was a little hesitant about doing so but since he is a Facebook friend I told him to keep an eye out on my page and let me know if he would of liked me to caption them and send them his way.

(Please Visit the link on the bottom for instagram photos. Due to their policy change I no longer support them and I removed my images)

And some came out a little grainy…but thats not user error just the sensor on a Droid phone not having the ability to compensate for the extreems and I think this is where the iPhone is a bit superior from other Instagrams I have seen from friends. Overall I think it was a fun experiment. Photos got published on the Record’s site but as I mention in my last blog I was feeling lots of pain in my foot and found it difficult to move around too much.

Adding Instagrams to the assignment ended up being a little overwhelming because of my foot but I think the experiment was fun. From the photos above those are photos I normally would not take during a game but with Instagrams settings they come out having an interesting look and feel. Even though Instagrams was a different pace and did take some time from capturing action I was still able to get some decent shots from the game.

Naturally I start off by taking photos of the warmups but because the foot drama was happening it took me too long to get ready to take a few from the warm-ups but was quick enough to get a couple during the singing of the national anthem.

Sierra High School is one of the schools I cover during football season for The Stockton Record. In my town, Tracy, there are 3 high schools, in the area that The Record covers are far more than 3 so you can imagine how busy they are at the record trying to figure out what game they should or should not cover. The photo-editor at The Record has been fairly considerate of my location and tends to stick with me covering football games mostly in the surrounding areas and comes out to be a win win; I dont have to commute to Stockton (30+ min) and they dont have to commute to Tracy!

Since Football season is basically finished for most of the High Schools, I mostly find my self covering playoff games. However, when playoffs start they are not always local and tend to find my self traveling a little. This time, as well as my last time, I was fortunate to have the game locally at Sierra High School in Manteca and only had to drive 10 min. Sierra High School Football Field taken with my HTC Android phone and shared with instagram.

After fighting some very bad traffic to get to the game (took me 2 hours to get here fyi) and forgetting my press pass, I found my self begging to get it (well not so much) but luckily I have covered these local schools long enough that people start to recognize me. Granted when I worked as a photographer full time, I was recognized by staff a lot more than now but I am impressed that so many recognize who I am for the very few season I have covered sports locally. After that fiasco I made the game on time but not on time to get some pre-game photos :(

Manteca High School Football : Oakdale at Manteca https://www.bballphotog.com/blog/2012/10/Manteca-High-School-Football-Oakdale-at-Manteca Manteca High School Football!

Football season is upon us and like usual, our area is very big on Friday night Prep football. This week I got to cover Manteca High School  (varsity football) take on the visiting team, Oakdale High School who travelled roughly 22 miles west from their home town of Oakdale, Calif. for the Stockton Record.

Prep football as well as any football can become repetative but I always try to find something new to shoot. Some times it pays off but sometimes it does not. You also have to take in consideration risk vs. reward and I will talk about that a bit more in this blog post.

Since this was an assignment for a client, getting early can be a helpful factor especially with a deadline. Most football games that I shoot for the paper has a deadline of 9:30pm – 10:00pm with games “starting” at 7:00pm (which seem to never happen since a J.V. game seems to always go over) covering a full game can be near impossible since around 10 images are required so I am usually out of there by half time.

I got to Manteca High around 6:30pm. Luckily this school gives press special parking so I got a nice spot right behind the bleachers. As you can see, because of that I was able to get a nice shot of the sun setting and the lights turned on. For this image I used my Canon 1D Mark III with the 70 – 200mm on. So now since I was at the game nearly 30 min early I was able to grab a photo like this compared to walking up and rushing to the sidelines to start grabbing action shots. Risk here? None! Reward? Great! Now I could of gotten a lot more creative but I still needed to clean up my gear, get the lenses cleaned up and batteries put into the bodies. Image 1, Check! (now 10 images is what is wanted but having 8-9 solid images can be ok as some games…like this one can be hard to shoot for more than one reason).

Oct. 26, 2012 – The Manteca band performs during game action against Oakdale on Friday at Manteca High School in Manteca, Calif. (Konstandinos Goumenidis / The Record)

Getting photos of “other stuff” can also be rewarding. Bands, fans, cheerleaders, warmups are all great filler images and gives another angle for fans that might want to read the story or just browse through some of the images. This field is known for bad lights for photographers to cover so taking a “risk” before the break is O.K. I took a bunch of images of the fans and band and even some of the cheerleaders but they didn’t show up very well so I ended up just scrapping them, but at least I got a couple images out of the way.

Oct. 26, 2012 – The Manteca band performs during game action against Oakdale on Friday at Manteca High School in Manteca, Calif. (Konstandinos Goumenidis / The Record)

A few more images came out ok but I shared the cream of the crop with the paper. Images such as the team captains walking to the middle of the field, the coin toss, and just general images that didn’t come out great were just disregarded and tossed. When I work with clients such as papers, you dont want the “just O.K.” images to come through because that is what you are remembered for next time you shoot so quantity does not always equal quality which clients like The Record look for.

As I mentioned earlier in this blog post, the lighting at this field is just plain BAD so I had to bump up the ISO and slow down the shutter. The game started and went fast. The first quarter there was a lot of running the ball especially coming from Manteca. There was no big plays in the start and a lot of running down the middle making it very hard for photos of game action.

The image with the players standing is something I have experimenting these days trying to show the fans and football players during the game. The depth of field that comes from the 400mm is great and gives a nice feel for what the game looks like from the sidelines and gives a decent image as a filler (3 images down). But at this point im pulling my hair not knowing what to do because 3 images is not going to do it.

I started to move around and trying to get some of the normal angles I get from the game to try and get some decent images. So now in the second quarter of the game I am struggling to find something. Luckily the game started to get a bit interesting. End of the second some big plays took place and the game got interesting fast. Check out some of the images I got in the remaining 5 min of the game.
